Quit yer Bitchin’
We look back at the 1960’s as a time period in which civil rights and personal freedom thrived on the passion and emotion of the youth. Today, people seem to always be interested in the 60’s whether it be the style of dress or music of the times. Whats strange is how very different the actions/mentalities of the two generations are. By way of rallies, boycotts, and sit-ins, positive change was provoked and barriers were broken. Adding to the credibility of these events, is the fact that the technology of the 60’s had nowhere near the potential to congregate that modern technology provides. For example, no one was BBMed or texted to come together for a cause. Instead, passionate, youthful, revolutionaries would communicate face to face allowing a mixture of ideas and motivations. In the modern age, despite being given such advanced means of communication, it seems that these advances have actually set back the art of standing up for what one believes. In theory these advances should make it that much easier for knowledge and ideas to spread, but instead it has seemingly decreased this generations’ drive for change and motivation to provoke such change. “idk” when communication in general became so impersonal and abrupt to the point where a telephone call is even too much effort, but I don’t like where its leading us. Now, one may believe that there aren’t issues to fight for in the modern age like there were in the 1960’s, but i don’t buy it. This opinion, I believe is due to a false consciousness that has seemingly swept the citizens of the US. What I mean by this, is that people have grown so accustomed to the way things are that they believe they are supposed to be this way. The fact that we are content being represented as little as we are and don’t stop to wonder why, is incredible. Technology keeps us distracted, while overly biased media withholds the real truth. While people feel entitled to voice their opinion and act like they really give a shit, words and actions are very different. Lets fight against rising tuitions, textbook prices, and healthcare premiums. If WE can make little steps to a better environment for all, I believe that power in numbers can overcome the power of the dollar. Pardon me if this idea is a little too utopian for your tastes, but at least we could give it a try.

Agreed, my friend. The millions of heads buried in cell phones are missing out on the beautiful things in this world that actually exist! If we can learn to appreciate the Blackberries that grow on bushes rather than the ones that suck us into the world on “BBM’s,” we might all be able to see a bit more clearly!!!
